Commissioning Your Portrait

Step 1:

Contact me to start a dialog about a possible portrait:
e-mail: pat@patsaunderswhite.com
phone: (970-278-1755)
Step 2:

Send me 2 or more photos of your pet or other portrait subject.
Photos must be:

  • Very close-up photos that are in focus
  • Without the use of a flash
  • Photographed at "eye level" with your pet/subject
  • Photographing of groups may be accomplished if someone stands behind them holding them in place.
  • If possible, photograph each animal separately. A group portrait can be composed from separate photos.
  • The better you follow these guidelines, the better your artwork will be!

Photos can be sent via post or email. Photos submitted by post will be returned in exactly the same condition as they are received. The detail of the completed artwork is related to the quality and clarity of the photos. The photo(s) to be used for the portrait should be clear and should accurately depict the colors of your pet. Additional photos provide me with insights to your pet's personality, coloring, details, etc.

Step 3: Submit a 50% non-refundable deposit.
Step 4: When the portrait nears completion, a photograph of the portrait will be sent to you. Subtle changes can be accommodated.
Step 5: Give final approval of the portrait and submit final payment including shipping
Step 6: Portrait will be shipped or delivered to you according to the pre-arranged method

  • I will email or phone you after I receive your order, to confirm it and ask questions that I may have before beginning on your pet's portrait, so be sure to provide me with your phone number and e-mail address.
  • Work is painted on archival quality materials to ensure the work retains its true colors.
  • Shipping cost is separate.
  • Your artwork will be sent, unframed and packed flat.
  • Provided photographs (CD's, etc) are returned to you with finished portrait.

Commission Pricing

Choice of pastel, acrylic or watercolor. Only archival materials are used. The portraits are not matted or framed.
  • Acrylic paintings are on Gallery Wrap Canvas which is 1" thick with painted edges that requires no framing.
  • Pastel paintings are on Moorman Crescent suade board.
  • Watercolor paintings are on Arches archival quality paper, usually 300 lb. hot press.

It does not include frame, glass, insurance, shipping or sales tax. Most of my clients prefer to take their artwork to a framer to personalize their purchase.

The size of a portrait is a personal choice. I believe that you should be able to enjoy your portrait from across the room. The larger size makes it possible to capture every important detail.

Please contact me for a quote on your painting. Actual prices may vary depending on size, number of animals and complexity of the work.

Lead Time

The lead time depends on how many commissions are currently in progress and the time of year. Usually after the portrait has been commissioned and the deposit is received, the finished portrait will be completed within 4-6 weeks. A more accurate completion date will be given at the time of ordering. Orders for holiday giving should be arranged 3-4 months prior. If you have a special time requirement or date in mind, a suitable time schedule can normally be facilitated.
